Established in 1962, the Fine Arts Section has cultivated numbers of outstanding art talents and made significant contribution the art and cultural development of the country over the past 40 years. At the beginning, the section was composed of three groups, Chinese Painting, Western Painting, and Sculpture. After the school was promoted to an institute in 1994, the Fine Arts Section was renamed the “Department of Fine Arts”.
After the painting and calligraphy group and sculpture group spun off in to two independent departments, the Department of Fine Arts has since specialized in cultivating and equipping students with the theories of eastern and western arts, in an attempt to inspire their creative thinking and encourage students to keep pace with social movements. In addition, we have introduced new thoughts and art & technology (ArT) to internationalize our development.
With over 700 staff and students, the department has a daytime division, continuing education division, and other programs. There is also the student association and class leaders. Aiming to cultivate professionals in art creation and art theory, students spread across Taiwan and the world after graduation to create works covering both traditional and innovative forms and contents. Each faculty member has his own specialties and is dedicated to cultural and art education and activities with outstanding performance. Along with the university’s well-established structure, students can develop a multidisciplinary, creative, and perspective vision through taking courses across disciplines and in an environment filled with the influence of different forms of art.
Courses of the Department of Arts are planned and designed to put eastern and western arts into practice and supported with theory education to cultivate the thoughts and creative thinking of students. These courses fall into the practical category (sketch, painting, ink-wash, sculpture, image, installation art, physical/performing arts, Art/new media), and theory category (art history, plastic art theory, and fine arts theory). In recent years, personal studio and master workshop schemes have been implemented to progressively equip students with the abilities to capture the trend of times, extend the horizon of expression, and start research in new fields through various teaching methods and elective courses.
As students must hold a graduation exhibition to meet the exhibition needs in their future art career and respond to the incessant change in the forms of art presentation, related exhibition planning practice, keynote speeches, and new media courses are planned and designed to enrich the creation and presentation needs of students and cultivate professionals with practical experience.
EDUCATION IN THE DEPARTMENT
Students will study the background, causes, evolution, and influence of theories relating to plastic arts to acquire a correct and complete theoretical framework and realize them in their creation. In addition, they provide the contents and essence for students to study art theories.
Emphasizing the long-term development of local identity, we launch internship programs with community culture and various culture foundations in hope of proposing a multicultural local identity in times of globalization.
Through international cultural and academic exchange, we create an internationalized learning environment to equip students with a constantly changing mind in pace with times for students to homogenously and synchronously engage in the international art stage.
